Congratulations to Doug Turnbull and his 1946 Piper PA-12. His trusty bird received the Best Back Country Custom Classic award during the recent 2022 SUN ‘n FUN Aerospace Expo in Lakeland, Florida. Doug and his plane were also recognized during the Aircraft Judging Awards Banquet held on the Saturday evening during the event.

SUN ‘n FUN started from humble beginnings in 1974 as a fly-in for sport aviation enthusiasts. It has since grown into one of the largest and most successful aviation events on earth. With over 200,000 visitors attending each year, the Expo is said to be Florida’s largest annual convention of any kind. For its enthusiastic participants, SUN ‘n FUN has become known as “Aviation’s Season Opener” or “Spring Break for Pilots.”

    Congratulations!!!
I had to sell my ‘46 L-4J 1.5 years ago due my med issues. Miss it.
    Enjoy. Fly safe.

Doug – you have done some work for me via Hamilton Bowen that I am very proud of (475 Linebaugh) and am thinking of a a complete redo of a very old beat up Lugar (30, 32, 9) ???? Do not have gun yet – I have seen your Rugars but never saw a Luger at your shop – can you / will you do one? The second question is what attracted you to your back country Piper vs say a newer Ariat Husky ? Thank you!

Thanks Dan — I had a stock -12 years ago and like them especially with the back country mods to it. Money on a newer Husky is a bit steeper. A nice Maule will haul a lot of stuff, or a C170B or C180 would be a nice choice too.
