The Springfield Model 1884 was one of the “Trapdoor Springfield” rifles. This rifle was an improved version of the previous U.S. armed forces longarm, Springfield’s Model 1873, and its variations. This example, S/N 184399, sports a 32 1/2-inch barrel chambered in .45-70 Government.
