Colt produced the sidehammer-equipped Model 1855 rifle and carbine for military and sporting use. A shotgun version was also made. These long arms were based on the same mechanics as Colt’s “Root” revolvers, named for Elisha K. Root, the holder of the sidehammer patent, who at that time was employed as Colt’s factory superintendent and Chief Engineer.

The Colt Model 1855 revolving shotgun was manufactured in limited numbers. Total production was approximately 1,100  between 1860 and 1863. The estimated production of 20 gauge examples is 500.
