How to Mount a Red Dot Sight to Your Lever Action Rifle without Drilling

More and more lever-action rifle hunters are turning to red dot sights from Burris, Vortex, Docter and others. For those of us relying on their favorite lever action rifles and carbines, installing our no-drill dovetail Picatinny rail mount to secure your red dot sight couldn’t be easier.

Turnbull Restoration’s Steve Lester takes us through the quick and easy process of installing our Picatinny barrel mount for red dot reflex sights. Our mount works on both octagon and round barrels.

ALWAYS unload and secure firearm before dovetail mount installation.

Factory sight is removed from left to right, new mount is installed right to left.

Tools used in this video:

  • Bench vise
  • Padded wooden vise jaw
  • Paper card
  • Ball-peen hammer
  • Brass punch
  • 3/32″ Allen Wrench
  • T-10 Torx Wrench

Instructions:

  1. The mount’s dovetail may be a few thousandths of an inch larger than the barrel’s dovetail slot.
  2. Check the inner corner profile of the slot. The mount’s dovetail may have sharp inside corners that need to be slightly filed to match the slot’s corners.
  3. If the mount does not start into the slot by hand, it may be necessary to sand the bottom of the dovetail lightly on a flat surface to remove a small amount of material. Once the mount can be started into the slot by hand, proceed to the next step.
  4. Using a brass punch or a hardwood dowel, gently tap the mount into place until it is centered on the barrel.
  5. Lightly tighten the center dovetail cup screw to secure the mount. Do not over-tighten, as this may damage the dovetail.

That would be great on rifles like a Mod 94 and such. Great idea!

Great video and I assume this mount would fit my Winchester Model 64 also?

Thank you, Mr. Crumbliss. Yes, with a 3/8″ dovetail our mount should work just fine. Keep in mind some minor fitting may be required (see the 1:35 mark in the video).
