Winchester Model 1892, Previously Restored

This Winchester Model 1892 was manufactured in 1911 and restored by our shop in 2015. Designed by John Moses Browning, the Model 1892 was Winchester’s lighter, stronger successor to the Model 1873, built around the same class of pistol cartridges that had long made the earlier lever guns so useful.

This example retains its original wood and parts and was restored to original specification. It has a 20-inch octagonal barrel. Most rifle configurations are more commonly encountered with 24-inch barrels, while 20-inch barrels are more often associated with carbines. The short octagon barrel gives this rifle a distinctive balance and profile while keeping the flats and feel of a rifle rather than a carbine.

The finishes were restored in keeping with the period. The lever and hammer are color case hardened. The receiver, forend cap, crescent buttplate, and small parts are charcoal blued. The barrel and full-length magazine tube are rust blued.

The original wood was restored as part of the 2015 work and finished with a hand-rubbed oil finish, keeping with the rifle’s period appearance while preserving its original stock and forend.

The bore is good overall, with some pitting toward the muzzle. The action functions properly, and the rifle presents as a carefully restored early 20th-century Winchester with its original material intact.
