We’re pleased to add to our showroom a rare Winchester Model 1866 Flat-Side Saddle Ring Carbine in .44 Rimfire. Carrying serial number 13805, this legend of the American frontier is an early production example dated from 1866.

Condition:
Barrel appears to be a replacement. Front and rear sights appear to be replacements. Barrel and full-length magazine retain a smooth even chocolate brown patina with a few spots of old surface discoloration. Receiver shows moderate wear with moderately worn edges with some light nicks and dings on right sideplate and with scattered surface spotting on both sides and sideplates. Lever and hammer are a dark brown patina. Buttplate is a medium mustard patina. Wood is sound, uncheckered American walnut  with restored finish having light handling and use marks. Mechanics are fine. Bright shiny five groove bore. Sharp rifling. The carbine has a staple and ring in left side.

Markings:
Serial number shows on left side of bottom tang under the wood, inside top tang channel of butt stock and inside toe of buttplate. Left side of lower tang is also stamped with the assembly number “661”. The barrel address is worn but legible. Forend and barrel band have no markings. Barrel has no serial or assembly margins. This carbine was produced early in 1866 while the Henry rifle was still being produced and falls within the Henry serial number range.

Because of their widespread use on the American frontier which involved hard use with little or no maintenance, not many of these early carbines survived in their original configuration. This is a nice opportunity to own a distinctly American piece of history.
