John Moses Browning’s Concealed Carry Masterpiece: Bringing a Colt 1908 Vest Pocket Back to Life
There is a quiet dignity to the Colt Model 1908 Vest Pocket. Small enough to be carried every day, refined enough to be studied under a loupe, and clever enough to bear the hand of John Moses Browning in both pistol and cartridge. This example, born in 1909 and returned to us in 2023, arrived as a compact time capsule. Our work aimed to reveal what the years had softly hidden while keeping every inch true to the pistol as it would have left the factory in the first decade of the 20th century.
First Steps: Disassembly, Inspection, Polish
We began with full disassembly, cleaning, and inspection. At some point in its life, plating had been applied to the frame, slide, and small parts, a finish not original to the factory. That plating was carefully stripped away, returning the pistol to bare steel and allowing us to restore it to its proper specification. Surfaces were then polished to a period-correct level, reflective yet restrained and factory-correct for an early Colt pocket pistol.
From Plating to Lustrous Blue
Finishes followed. The frame and slide received a deep, authentic charcoal blue. The trigger, grip safety, and slide lock were bone charcoal color case hardened in subdued patterns true to the era. Small parts such as the extractor, magazine catch, grip screw, and pins were nitre blued, offering distinct contrast without distraction. Each choice harmonizes so the pistol reads as a single, coherent piece.
After oiling, greasing, and careful reassembly, final inspection confirmed both function and appearance. The result is not a flashy restoration, but one rooted in faithfulness to period craftsmanship.
Elegance in Small Things: Preserving History, Finish, and Craftsmanship
For enthusiasts who love the small things that tell big stories, this Vest Pocket is a reminder that elegance in firearms is not only a matter of lines. It is a matter of finish, of proportion, and of thoughtful work. In returning this Colt pistol from 1909 to a state that respects both its maker and its many quiet years of service, we aimed to preserve the pistol as a document of its time. It is a humble little gun that carries a great deal of history.

1916 Colt Commercial 1911
I sent my 1916 manufactured Colt Commercial 1911 for restoration and am blown away by how amazing it looks. Money well spent on what is to become a true family heirloom and will definitely get a lot of attention in the display case. Thank you Turnbull!
Union Switch & Signal
I have had my Dad’s Union Switch & Signal 1911 A-1 for many years. It had been refinished, but not to original condition. Turnbull Restoration craftsmen brought it back to its original condition when it left Swissvale Pa. in 1943. I display it to honor my Dad, and his service in WWII in the United States Marine Corp from 1943 to 1946. It’s in the family to stay!
Worth every penny!
Unbelievable work. Some of the finest craftsmanship I’ve seen in the firearm industry. Turnbull has worked on, restored, and engraved a number of revolvers, rifles and 1911s in my collection. True works of art!
